This initiative focuses on the cooperative development of a management plan for the MPA by the Council of the Haida Nation and Fisheries and Oceans Canada
SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount and the surrounding area have been designated by both the CHN and Fisheries and Oceans Canada as a marine protected area. A management plan is currently in development, with the overarching objective to conserve and protect the unique biodiversity and biological productivity of the area.
SGaan Kinghlas Supernatural Being Looking Outward is an ecologically rich and culturally significant area. The 3100-metre underwater mountain supports an abundance of marine life. Currently there is a sablefish trap fishery that occurs within the MPA and large vessel traffic transits within and adjacent to the MPA.
SGaan Kinghlas is located 180 km offshore of Haida Gwaii.
The SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount MPA Management Plan is being collaboratively developed by CHN and Fisheries and Oceans Canada with input from an Advisory Committee, stakeholder groups, and the public.
